Frieze Masters / Viewing Room / Patrick Procktor

Frieze Masters est une foire que nous apprécions particulièrement: placer de grands artistes du passé sous un éclairage contemporain est même la raison d’être de notre galerie, créée il y a deux ans maintenant. 

Pour l’édition 2020, qui devait se dérouler dans les jours qui viennent, la commissaire Laura Hoptman, excellente directrice du Drawing Center de New York, avait plébiscité notre projet d’un solo-show dédié à Patrick Procktor. Disparu en 2003, ce dandy au destin foudroyé, figure flamboyante du Swinging London, est un immense aquarelliste anglais de voyage, selon les mots de son ami David Hockney.

Réalisées lors de ses séjours en Italie, en Inde, en Allemagne, en Chine, au Maroc ou au Portugal, ses aquarelles sont en effet autant de portraits envoûtants, de ses amis célèbres ou inconnus, et de paysages virtuoses. Intriqués, son art et sa vie ont fait l’objet d’un livre passionnant; de nombreux articles parus récemment, dans le Magazine du Monde ou L’Express, lui rendent un hommage mérité.

Admirer un florilège de ses meilleurs œuvres des années 1960 et 1970 (et pouvoir en acquérir!) n’a jamais été aussi facile! Nous vous invitons en effet:

• à visiter la Viewing Room que nous lui consacrons sur Frieze Online, du 9 au 16 octobre, en suivant ce lien;

• à découvrir l’exposition «Patrick Procktor, Postures» à la galerie (rendez-vous personnalisés possibles) jusqu’au 31 octobre prochain. Les images de l’accrochage sont visibles ici.

Frieze Masters is an art fair that we particularly appreciate: placing great artists from the past in a contemporary light is even the raison d'être of our gallery, created two years ago now.

For the 2020 edition, which was to take place in the coming days, the curator Laura Hoptman, excellent director of the Drawing Center of New York, had plebiscited our project of a solo-show dedicated to Patrick Procktor. Disappeared in 2003, this dandy with a lightning destiny, a flamboyant figure of Swinging London, is an immense English watercolourist travelling abroad, in the words of his friend David Hockney.

His watercolors, painted during his stays in Italy, India, Germany, China, Morocco and Portugal, are indeed as many bewitching portraits, of his famous or unknown friends, and virtuoso landscapes. Intrigued, his art and life have been the subject of a fascinating book; many articles published recently, in the Magazine du Monde or L'Express, pay a deserved tribute to him.

Admiring an anthology of his best works from the 1960s and 1970s (and being able to acquire some!) has never been so easy! Indeed, we invite you:

• to visit the Viewing Room that we devote to him on Frieze Online, from October 9th to 16th, by following this link.
